Snow White was onto something

Getting good rest is necessary to losing weight. The chronic stress of lack of sleep increases cortisol and makes it nearly impossible to reach your weight loss goals.

What? I will sleep when I am dead

I feel that way too!

But sleep is an important part of our body’s rest and if it doesn’t happen we will not be the healthy people we want to be.

I get it. Getting to sleep is not simple. I have had insomnia for years and have done everything recommended for sleep hygiene.

But working on my sleep habits has been so helpful in getting sleep every night. I had distress associated with waking up in the middle of the night which always meant I would never go back to sleep.

After a long struggle, I have been rebuilding my sleep habits and insomnia is not a constant factor in my life.

Here are my some of the things that have worked for me.

-Kava Kava, does not help me fall asleep but relaxes me when there is stress

-Dreamwork- I look forward to my dreams and consider different dream images as I fall asleep or when I wake up

-iawake app. Amazing theta waves sounds

-Total body mindfulness guided meditation.

So what does that have to do with weight loss?

So the nerds that make studies have found a ton of connections. Here are a few. (Love those nerds!)

-Lack of sleep increases ghrelin (which is the hungry hormone). This means when you sleep poorly, you eat poorly.

-A study showed  that people with 5 hours of sleep vs the control of 7 hours of sleep had a significant decrease in weight loss

-Sleep deprivation decreases the leptin hormone (The I’m not hungry) which would cause some obvious setbacks.

So reach out! Lets talk sleep and weight loss. Lets talk health and you.
